Celia Saenz Garcia was born July 9, 1937, in San Antonio, Texas to Maria and Crispin Saenz. She attended Lanier High School and as an adult returned to school obtaining an associate degree from San Antonio College and enrolled at Our Lady of the Lake University.
She married the love of her life, Serapio de Jesus “Coy” Garcia on January 1, 1956, in San Antonio, Texas.
She worked as a seamstress at various manufacturing companies in San Antonio and later taught children at the YWCA. She served on the board of directors for Avance and PCI Head Start during the 1980’s as a community member, having been a recipient of their services while raising her youngest son Ronnie and helping to raise her firstborn grandson, Daniel. She served as President of LULAC Council #4811. She was awarded the Mother of the Year Award in by the Rosalio Saenz Family Reunion. And, in the 1980’s she was fortunate enough to meet Prince Charles when he visited San Antonio.
Celia began painting through the Bihl Haus Arts’ program for seniors, The Goldens at the Alice Treviño Lopez Senior Center. Her artwork was purchased by and can be found at the Lopez Senior Center, Dr. Jose Lopez’ office, the local WellMed Vice President, as well as in numerous homes across Texas. She was also very generous in gifting many paintings to people she loved.
Celia is preceded in death by her loving husband Serapio de Jesus “Coy” Garcia, Sisters Violet, Margarita, Asucena, and Brothers Robert and Jesse.
Celia is survived by Daughters Victoria S. Garcia, Judy Garcia, Annette Lerma and her husband Ray Lerma and Sons Margarito Garcia and his wife Helen Garcia, Jesse Garcia, Robb S. Garcia and Ron S. Garcia and fiance Cynthia Rodriguez, Niece Lydia Lerma and her husband Adam Lerma, Grandchildren Daniel Ramos, Steven Lerma and wife Jordan Lerma, Victoria Lerma, Melissa Martinez and her husband Rene Martinez and Mark Aaron Garcia, Great Grandchildren Jayden, Jase, Jaxson, and Mila.
Pallbearers will be Grandsons Daniel Ramos, Steven Lerma, Mark Aaron Garcia, Nephews Fred Hernandez, Rene Martinez, and Family Friend Adam Olmos.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 10 am to noon on Monday, May 20, 2024, at Sunset Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Rd, San Antonio, TX 78238. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery No.2 746 Castroville Rd, San Antonio, TX 78237.
