Charles was born on January 25, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee and soon after moved to Texas, where his family originated. Chizzy grew up with his older brother Joe and younger sister Jane in Olmos Park, the middle son of Alma and Joe Davis. Chiz, who had a sunny, fun-loving disposition, was notorious for his pranks and escapades which he laughingly would recount in later years and led him to befriend the neighborhood police officer who took him on patrol rides.
After attending the University of Texas, Chizzy enlisted in the US army and thereafter met the love of his life, Carolyn Jo “JoJo” Davis, from Harlingen, Texas, whom he married in 1962. They settled in San Antonio and Charles worked with his father, Joe, at Sanivac Davis Manufacturing Company. Years later, Charles started Cleaning Ideas, a successful local chain of stores which sold Sanivac, the product his father Joe had invented, and a growing variety of cleaning and janitorial products.
Charles was a deeply caring family man. His family was the center of his world. He was a wonderful husband to JoJo and a proud loving father to his sons, Randall and Jeffrey. He was also a father to his daughter-in-laws, Laini Alpard Davis and Gabrielle Dimetman Davis, who adored him.
Ever the optimist, if you asked Charles how his day was, he would invariably respond, “Fantastic!” and that very word is how his family, friends and everyone would describe Chizzy.
Over the years, Charles welcomed seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Colby, Madeleine, Paige, Alexa, Jacqueline and Audrey, all of whom cherished their PeePaw, who attended countless sports matches, concerts, school events and graduations to cheer them on.
Charles and JoJo had a circle of couple friends with whom they “grew up” from childhood and college to young adulthood, parenthood, middle age and beyond. Charles loved traveling with his family, hosting with his grilled-to -perfection beef tender and homemade barbeque sauce, collecting miniature hand painted soldiers and reading countless books about history and politics.
Charles will be missed but never forgotten. Chizzy’s family is, and always will be, grateful for all of his love and all of the joyous moments they shared with him. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Joe Davis, and his brother, Joe. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Jo “JoJo” Davis, his sons and daughter-in-laws, Randall and Laini Davis and Jeffrey and Gabrielle Davis, his grandchildren, Nicholas, Colby, Madeleine, Paige, Alexa, Jacqueline and Audrey Davis, and his sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Michael Zager, extended family and countless dear friends and neighbors.
There will be a private burial service for the family. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and Dr. Richard and Ethel Wayne.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice.
