Charles Schreiner Nelson passed away on Friday August 24, 2007 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on September 10, 1937, in New York, New York. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Strauder Goff Nelson and Kittie Schreiner Nelson Pugsley, and by his brother, Strauder Goff Nelson, Jr. He is survived by his son, Charles Schreiner Nelson, Jr. and wife, Stephanie, his daughter Shawnee Nelson Dempsey and her husband Keith and her children David Marshall Denn and Christopher Nelson Denn, and his son Marshall Strauder Nelson. He is also survived by his sister, Kittie Nelson Ferguson, her daughter, Kittie West Hughes and husband Tom, her son Henry Rugeley Ferguson, Jr. and his daughter, Reese Payton Ferguson, his sister-in-law Carolyn Sue Nelson, and former wife Shawn Nelson Smith. Schreiner will be missed by many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and countless friends who meant so much to him. Schreiner graduated from TMI and also from the University of Texas at Austin and was a life-long Longhorn fan. While attending UT he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He served as a board member of Frost National Bank and San Antonio Savings and was President of the San Antonio Country Club. Schreiner was Director of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and Director and past President of the American Cancer Society of Bexar County. Some of his club affiliations were The Argyle, past President of The Order of the Alamo, San Antonio German Club, Texas Cavaliers and the San Antonio Rotary Club. He served on the board of Allied Van Lines Scobey's Moving and Storage for many years.
Schreiner was particularly proud of his Texas heritage as great grandson of wool and mohair mogul, Captain Charles Armand Schreiner, a Texas Ranger, and Mary Magdalen Enderle. His great uncle was George Washington West, married to Kittie Searcy, and he was one of the last cattle barons of the old West and Founder of George West, Texas. Although his father, Strauder Goff Nelson was a native of Kentucky, he settled in San Antonio in 1929 after becoming one of the largest oil producers on the Tampico Field, Mexico.
Schreiner enjoyed all aspects of life, traveled many paths and enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting with his children, many friends and his faithful companion Willie. He understood that cancer is so limited: it cannot rob us of hope, peace, friendship, joy or of life's meaning; it cannot conquer the human spirit. The family gives special thanks to Deborah Hewett, his longtime administrative assistant, for her support over the years and during his illness.
