

Mark Charles Carrigan, Colonel, USA, (ret.), age 99, passed away August 10, 2021, at home in San Antonio, with daughter Kim and sister-in-law Patricia by his side. He was born January 9, 1922, in Iron Mountain, Michigan, to Mark Joseph and Bertha Tetzlaff Carrigan.
He is survived by daughter Kimberly Carrigan, granddaughters Jane Buckley Maher and Leigh Katherine Buckley Campbell (Donald); four great-grandsons and six great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 78 years, Marietta Rasbury Carrigan, daughter Nora Linda Carrigan Buckley, and brothers Ralph, Robert, and John.
Mark graduated from his beloved LSU where he met the love of his life, Marietta. They married March 21, 1943, shortly before he deployed to North Africa and Europe in WWII. During the war, Mark earned a Bronze Star in 1945 for skilled leadership and morale in bridging a German river while under fire. He earned a BS in mechanical engineering from LSU where he was elected into Phi Kappa Phi honor society. He later was awarded a master’s degree in civil engineering from Caltech, attended the Command and General Staff School, and the Army War College. Mark enjoyed a fulfilling career in the US Army Corps of Engineers in the US and overseas. His civilian engineering posts included Construction Coordinator of the Louisiana Superdome and Project Engineer at the Hanford nuclear site in Richland, WA.
Mark was admired for his devotion to his family and dedication to his career. He will be sorely missed by the Towers on Park Lane community where he served on the Board of Directors for two terms and directed the Guest Speakers program. He was a Presbyterian Elder and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio. Prior to that, he was an active member of the Kennewick Presbyterian Church of Kennewick, WA.
The family extends special thanks for the care given by VITAS Hospice staff and his dedicated caregivers.
