23 February 1920 - 11 October 2012
David C., as he was called by his family, was born in Ellis County, Texas to Ollie Paul and Effie Odom Paul, who were tenant farmers outside of Waxahachie.
He left the farm in the fall of 1941 to join the Army Air Corps and was stationed in San Antonio, a city that remained the center of his orbit for the rest of his life.
During WWII, he sang in the choir at Travis Park UMC where he met his future wife of 63 years, Lorraine DeArment Paul; they married in December of 1946.
After the war, David received encouragement from his friends, William A. and Claire Triggs to attend Trinity University in San Antonio. Near the end of his tenure at Trinity, his philosophy professor moved to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. After graduating from Trinity in 1948, he and his life-long friend John Silber, with spouses in hand, continued their graduate studies at Yale. His faith lead him to Yale Divinity School, and he received his Masters of Divinity in 1951.
Returning to Texas, he joined the Southwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church and began his career as a Methodist minister. David was the founding pastor of St. Mark's UMC on Vance Jackson Rd. San Antonio. He also served other churches in the conference including, Kyle, the Wesley Foundation at UT Austin, Lytle, Mercedes, San Angelo, Austin, Edinburg, Highland Terrace in San Antonio, and Seguin.
He retired in 1985 to San Antonio; his last residence was The Meadows retirement center on Babcock Rd. David C. had many friends and was loved by all who really knew him. As a father, he said that raising three sons with his wife, Lorraine, was the most joyous thing he ever did.
