Dennis Wesley “D.W.” Niles was unexpectedly called home to be with the Lord on March 8, 2024 at the age of 81, in San Antonio, TX. He was born on September 10, 1942, in Buffalo, NY, to parents, Betty Southall McCarty and Wallace H. “Bud” Niles. He was the oldest of three children.
Dennis began working for Missouri Pacific Railroad after graduating from Robert E. Lee High School, in San Antonio, TX, retiring in 2011 after 48 years of service from Union Pacific as a conductor with tremendous seniority.
We will miss our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who enjoyed live bluegrass music, restoring and collecting antique cars, working in his yard, and spending time with his dogs. Dennis had a sharp mind and a love of books. He was a voracious reader. His love of books was only surpassed by his love for the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs as evidenced by his daily wear TCU socks and the frog’s flag flying high on game days. His peaceful nature, generous smile, kindness, and blue overalls endeared him to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Wallace H. “Bud” Niles & Betty Jean Lewis Niles, Pete McCarty & Betty Southall McCarty, Leroy “Cotton” Powell & Bonnie Powell; and his sister, Christine Niles Muenzler.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda B. Powell Niles; his four children: Camellia Leos, Denise Canales, Darrin Niles, and Deena Niles Bridges; his eight grandchildren: Rebbecca Morales, Michael Syrcle, Brian Syrcle, Olivia Traver, Taylor Niles, Blakely Niles, Lauren Bridges, and Caroline Bridges; his six great-grandchildren: Nathan Davidson, Ethan Davidson, Brinley Niles, Brooks Campbell, John Robert “JR” Traver, and Caleb Traver; his sister, Pam Schultz; and his fur babies, D’Angelo & D’Marco.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Dickson and staff for many years of loving care and friendship.
