Diane Baker Cook

Diane B. Cook, who was known for her beauty, kindness, grace, elegance, intelligence and style and as a good-will ambassador and mentor, died early morning on March 6th, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. She was 81 years old. Born in Clovis, New Mexico to Steve and Margorie Baker, Diane was raised in Big Spring, Texas and graduated from Texas Tech University. She remained an avid "guns up" Red Raider sports fan.

She married Lt Donald G. Cook and her long service to the Air Force and her country began.She had the ability to make everyone feel welcome, whether hosting a dinner for fourteen Russian colonels and generals from the Strategic Rocket Forces, to an intimate dinner for the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee or sharing Mother's Day dinner with US Senator Craig Thomas (WY). Diane demonstrated strength during fatal aircraft accidents and other tragic events to ensure families received compassionate care. On one occasion, Diane drove from Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX to San Angelo, Tx to "rescue" a stranded young Air Force wife whose husband was flying later than expected. Despite moving 26 times in 36 years, she remained a steadfast and devoted partner in life and career to her husband of 54 years. In recognition, she was awarded The Exceptional Service Award from the Secretary of the Air Force and was commissioned a Yellow Rose of Texas by the Governor of Texas. Above all, Diane was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was so loved and cherished for her dedication to her children and her grandchildren. She was always patient, willing to listen, provided gentle advice and did whatever she thought was needed to help guide her children and grandchildren. Diane found great joy in celebrating her grandchildren's milestones and was always present in their lives. She was a role model for demonstrating the "right" and gracious thing to do. She was the heartbeat of our family and loved her family with her whole heart. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, warmth, unconditional love and all the special memories and laughter we shared with her.

Diane was an avid reader and found great joy and comfort in reading, always having a book nearby. She recently told Don that "books were her friends", she had so many books and so many friends. Diane also loved her dogs and though out her marriage had three Schnauzers, three Westies and three Labradors, not all at once, however. She was also so proud to be a Charter member of Chi Omega Sorority at Texas Tech University.

Diane had many friends she loved, some from her childhood years that she was close to her entire life, many from the Air Force, local communities and neighbors that she loved and treasured. They provided her with a lot of laughter, support and fun.

Diane Cook was an accomplished woman who will be remembered and missed by many.

She is survived by her husband General Don Cook, USAF, (Retired), her daughter, Stephanie Griffin, her son-in-law Lt. Colonel John Griffin, USAF, (Retired), son, Christopher Cook and her grandchildren, Trevor Giffin, Reilly Griffin (Major Zach Lewis, Reilly's husband), Liam Cook and her great granddaughter, Maeve Lewis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Air Force Aid Society or the American Cancer Society.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North 2102 North Loop 1604 East San Antonio, Texas 78232.
