Don Wesley Parton loved to travel and on October 21, 2022 (his dad’s birthday), he made his final trip; this time to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior, at the age of 86. Don was born on June 20, 1936 in the country outside of Muleshoe, Texas to Lois Melvin and Mary Ella Parton. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Wanda Crocker and brothers, Leon and Bennie. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris; his sons, Gregory, Michael (Karen), Christopher and daughter, Melinda. He was a loving grandfather to Shelby Parton, Victoria Swisher, Sierra Crawford (fiancé Josh Deen), Madison Crawford (fiancé, Christian Acosta), Gavin Campbell, Charli Rose Campbell, and his great-granddaughter, Naomi Deen. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he loved them dearly. They were always amused at Pa Pa’s weird sayings and jokes – especially The Duck Joke. He is also survived by his sister, Leona (Doyle) McAdams of Temple, Texas and his sister-in-law, Shirley Parton of Chandler, Texas, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Family was such an important part of Don’s life and he so enjoyed visiting with them.
Don graduated from Temple High School in 1955. Shortly after graduation, he and his best friend since 7th grade, Orval Ward, joined the Air Force on the Buddy System, serving four years in the military. He served in Texas, Mississippi, and Spokane, Washington. Upon leaving the Air Force, he began working in Civil Service for the next “41 years, 11 months and 29 days – but who’s counting!”, he would always tell people. During these years, the family spent time in Alabama, Louisiana, Ohio, and Texas.
In 1968 the Parton family had their first taste of camping and enjoyed doing this for the next 40 plus years, often in their favorite spot – Ouray, Colorado, as he dearly loved the mountains. In fact, two months before his passing, he wanted to make one last trip to Ouray. Due to his failing health, this was not possible. After retirement, the Partons and Wards took three extended camping trips to visit different parts of the beautiful United States. Besides camping, Don enjoyed working with genealogy, collecting coins, and restoring Model A cars.
Don became a Christian as a young boy and was very active in the church wherever they lived. He and Doris spent the past 46 years as members of Rainbow Hills/The Hills Church, where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher.
Don will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
