was born in Pampa, Texas to Ted and Opal Scott in 1932. Don’s paternal linage can be traced to
his 10th great-grandfather, Sir Walter ‘Auld Wat’ Scot - an infamous boarder reiver in Scotland.
Don was raised on ranches all over the great state of Texas as his father was a well-known
cattleman. So when he had to chance to see the rest of the world, he took it and joined the
U.S. Army in July 1955 for 2 years. He was stationed at Ft. Knox, KY and then landed in
Germany. While in Germany he developed a passion for photography.
Upon returning to the States, he continued his education and received a BS & MS
in education from Texas A&I in Kingsville, TX following in his mother’s path as she was a
lifelong educator. He went on to teach math and science in Victoria, TX, Uvalde, TX & Waco,
TX.
In June of 1962 he married. Don legally adopted his first wife’s 3-year-old daughter, Karen, and
was an instant father. Then in May 1963 they had a son, Stewart. Don and Inez divorced in 1986.
After leaving the classroom he went back to roaming Texas as a textbook sales rep for Houghton
Mifflin where he had a distinguished career for over 20 years. After he retired, he went back to
school and obtained a Special Education Certificate. He then found one of the most satisfying
careers of his life: teaching special needs children at Laurel Ridge Hospital before fully retiring
after 7 years.
During this time Don had become involved at Trinity Baptist Church and his Christian life
blossomed. He used the love of Christ that was in his heart to help those in need. Specifically, he
reached out to young men during the AIDS crisis who had been deserted by their families.
He would visit them in hospitals, being there for them.
When one door closes another door opens. That’s just what happened in late 1986 when Don met
Sallie. On 20 July 1991 they were married at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church.
Sallie brought to his life two stepdaughters, DeeDee and Holly.
The Scott’s were active in Alamo Heights United Methodist Church and Don helped Sallie with
her activism for animal welfare and rescue. Don was also an active member of the Classic Car
Club of America and other antique auto clubs. Additionally, after being introduced to Sallie’s
multi-generation vacation spot at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Don fell in love with
it, too, and they made regular trips, including a trip for the renewal of their wedding vows in July
of 2009. Don and Sallie were blessed with 29 wonderful years together.
He was a man of simple gentility and kindness. He thrived on the love of being a good father,
happy “PaPa”, and loving husband. And above all, an example of true unconditional Christian
love.
He will be missed by his wife, Sallie; daughter, Karen Sullivan of San Antonio; son, Stewart Scott
(Ted) of Washington D.C.; stepdaughters, Deanna Dunham of Lansing, NY, Holly (Mark) Trice
of Waco, TX and grandchildren, Grace, Foster, Ethan, and Faith Trice and Sterling Wasser.
Because of Don’s love of organ music, donations can be made to the church organ fund in lieu of
flowers. Donations can be sent to Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, 825 E Basse Rd, San
Antonio, TX 78209.
