Dr. Willard Bruce Platzer, Jr., known affectionately to friends and family as Bill, passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas on October 5, 2024, after a courageous battle with a long-term illness. Born on April 6, 1942, in Galveston, Texas, Bill's 82-year journey through life was marked by his humor, intelligence, and loving nature.
Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Frances Platzer.
Bill's academic pursuits were as notable as his sense of humor. After earning a Bachelor's Degree from Lamar University, he furthered his education with a Master's Degree and PhD from the University of Arkansas. His passion for education and marketing led him to a distinguished career, where he served as a Department Head and Professor of Marketing at Pan American University and later as the Dean of Education at the University of the Incarnate Word. His dedication to his profession and his students was evident in the wisdom he imparted and the countless lives he influenced.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was a man of many interests and talents. His love for music could be heard in his joyous singing with the church choir and various chorales throughout his life. He found great pleasure in harmonizing with others and was often the heart of the musical group with his funny and loving spirit.
Traveling was another of Bill's passions. Alongside his beloved wife Fran, Bill explored the United States in their motorhome, creating a tapestry of memories that extended from the red rocks of Arizona, the mountains of Colorado, to the serene beaches of Florida. These adventures with Fran were among his most cherished moments, filled with laughter, discovery, and the simple joy of each other's company.
Bill's legacy is lovingly carried on by his family, who were his pride and joy. He was a devoted father to David Platzer, Susan Thompson, and Chris Cropper. His role as a father-in-law to Ken Thompson and Marcy Cropper was carried out with the same warmth and guidance he provided to his own children. Bill's grandchildren—KC Thompson and his wife Lauren, Kaitlyn Thompson, Jason Thompson, Nicole Platzer, Noah Platzer, and James Wilson and wife Kristen—will forever treasure their grandfather's humor, stories, and the unwavering support he provided throughout their lives.
Dr. Willard Bruce Platzer, Jr.'s life was a testament to the power of education, the beauty of music, and the depth of familial love. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him, yet his spirit will continue to resonate in the halls of academia, the melodies of the choirs he once sang with, and the hearts of his family and friends.
As we bid farewell to Bill, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, marked by achievements, passions, and an enduring love for those around him. Though he has left this earthly realm, the echoes of his laughter, the wisdom of his teachings, and the warmth of his love will remain with us always. Dr. Platzer's life was a symphony of joy, intellect, and compassion—a symphony that will play on in the memories of those who loved him.
