

Col. Edythe "Jean" Hathaway U.S. Army (ret.), 89, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2012. She was born April 18, 1923, in Joplin, Missouri, to Gertie Bird and Victor Gilmore Fetty. In 1944, Jean graduated from St. John's Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Joplin, Mo. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945 and served as an army nurse in Japan, caring for wounded U.S. POW's. After a brief return to civilian life, she was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and served in Korea. After the Korean War, Jean had assignments in Japan, Germany, and Hawaii. Jean's last assignment was in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, where she retired in 1976. She then moved to San Antonio, where she resided until her death. After retirement, she enjoyed gardening, golf, her beloved cats, and her circle of friends. She was especially active in the Women's Overseas Service League. Jean was predeceased by her brother, James Gilmore Fetty.
She is survived by her niece, Edie Fetty Steele, of Orange, California; step-nephew Michael Gibson, of Rockville, Maryland; and step-niece Patricia Wood, of Punta Gorda, Florida.
Burial service with full military honors will be at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio TX, on Friday, May 11, 2012, at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Women's Overseas Service League National Scholarship Fund.
