

He lived in Freer, Texas while his father was in the oil business. After graduation from high school he moved to San Antonio where he began working as a bell hop at the St. Anthony Hotel. He also began playing volleyball at the local YMCA and it became his favorite sport.
He went to Draughons Business College and from there began work at GPM (Government Personnel Mutual). He continued to play volleyball and went with teammates to New York to try out for the first volleyball team in the Olympics.
EJ married and had a son Steven Jay. He divorced and took custody of Steven. On December 23, 1983, he married Mardale Matlock. They took many trips, and travel became another favorite activity. They were married 41 years.
EJ was preceded in death by both his parents as well as his sisters Willie Mae, Edna Inez, Erma Louise and brother LD Aaron.
