A graduate of Girls' High in Atlanta, with bachelor's degrees from Baldwin Wallace College (Berea, OH) and Kent State University (Kent, OH), Elaine was a well-read and intellectually curious person. She married Allan H. Johnston of Mt. Lebanon, a suburb of Pittsburgh, in 1952, and they enjoyed a life of travel, the arts, reading, and lively discussion on the events of the day. Elaine was also a wonderful cook with a love for entertaining.
Allan and Elaine lived in New Bremen and Hudson, OH, where they raised their two children, David and Diane. In Hudson, Elaine was active in the League of Women Voters, and eventually ran for and was elected to Village Council, where she was instrumental in developing a combination of flood control and parks that was known as the "Green Plan." In 1978, the Johnston's relocated to Walnut Creek, CA. There Elaine continued to be active in local politics, and served as both a member and chair of the Planning Commission. They spent 25 fabulous years in the east bay area and then relocated to San Antonio to be near their daughter's family.
They joined Coker United Methodist Church and were active members of the Becomers class. For the past five years, Elaine was a resident of Franklin Park Sonterra, where she and Allan developed many close friendships.
Throughout their lives, Elaine and Allan enjoyed theater, music concerts, and a good glass of wine. Their travels took them throughout Europe and the United States, a love they passed along to their children.
Elaine is survived by her sister, Joanne Donley (Howard); sister-in-law, Ann Johnston; children, David (Emily), Diane Graves (William); grandchildren, Peter (Amberly) and Elena; her two nephews, Russ and Scott Teasdale; nieces, Janis McKenna and Barbara Jones and their families. She also leaves her beloved grand-dog, Hopscotch, a Scottish Terrier and many dear friends.
