

Born on a farm near Belton, Texas to wonderful parents, he attended Belton Elementary School and Salado High School in Salado, Texas. He later attended the University of Maryland and San Antonio Community College.
He was a proud veteran of the US Army and served with the Second Division in WWII in the European operations, retiring after forty-five years of total service in the military.
Upon returning to the US, he was assigned to the Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas. Following this tour of duty, he was assigned Headquarters 4th Army in Fort Sam Houston, subsequently serving in Japan and Korea.
Returning to the US, he was reassigned to Headquarters Special Troops in March 1961, as Sergeant Major of Special Troops, Headquarters 4th Army and in 1964, served in Fort Greeley, Alaska at the Northern Warfare Training Center, of which he served until retirement in 1966.
In August 1966, he accepted a position as Senior Army Instructor with the JROTC at Sam Houston High School ~ serving for over nineteen years.
Always an advocate of public education in Texas, his fondest memories were of his position at Sam Houston High School and the JROTC, considering this to be the highlight of his life achievement.
He loved fishing, gardening, farming and ranching.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Vivian VanOrmer Bayer.
He is survived by his daughters: Roxy Lynn Bayer and Keyna Layne Bayer; son, Dallas Bayer and wife, Dori; grandchildren: Daughn Ynman and husband, Damian; Deena Saenz and husband, Jonathan; Danae Kohlleppel and husband, Ricky; great grandchildren, Dustin Ynman and Brooklyn Kohlleppel.
He is also survived by his long-time, loving companion, Mildred Geigenmiller and her loving family; his friend, Marie; and many other friends.
Visitation will be on Sunday, January 25th from 12:00/Noon to 8:00 P.M. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
