Elizabeth Jane Berner Anderson was called home to her Savior on Sunday February 22, 2026. She was affectionately known as Betty throughout her lifetime. Betty was born at the home of her parents George Henry Berner and Loretta Laura Shadel Berner on November 16, 1922, in Minersville, Pennsylvania.
Betty was baptized and attended the English Lutheran Church in Minersville, and she graduated from Cass Township High School on June 19, 1940. She then enrolled at the Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her degree as a Cadet Nurse in 1947. Moving to San Antonio, Texas in June 1948, she began her career as a nurse - first at the Baptist Memorial Hospital and later at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) where she met and fell in love with Quentin Sam Anderson. They were married March 19,1949. They welcomed their first daughter Rebecca Lynn Anderson on March 6, 1950, and a second daughter Cathy Ellen Anderson on October 9, 1952. A son Kurt Quentin Anderson was born August 1, 1955, then came twins Karl and Melissa on May 1, 1957.
The Anderson family joined Redeemer Lutheran Church in 1952, rarely missing service. Betty faithfully taught Sunday School for nursery through kindergarten aged children for over 30 years. She also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Sunday School for two years. Betty continued her nursing career, and in June 1965 she was employed by the Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital where she excelled in the newborn nursery and later was promoted to Charge Nurse position until she retired on December 30, 1988. Betty began volunteering her time and talents at the Pregnancy Care Closet. She then volunteered at Hannah's Closet for more than eight years. Betty began to attend Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church joining in 1992. She moved from San Antonio to Fair Oaks Ranch to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law. At the age of 100 she moved to an assisted living community where she had friends, activities, many visitors, and excellent loving care from the staff.
Betty was an avid sports fan, following golf, pro and collegiate football, basketball, and soccer. Both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games were on her "must watch" list. Her favorite teams - of course - were the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs. The most important people in her life were her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her children, grandchildren, and great granddaughters. Betty's home was the center of activities for her family and the place where she prepared and served literally thousands of Sunday dinners. She always welcomed her grandchildren and their friends, and she was always there to cheer them on at swim meets, never missing one.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, twelve siblings, husband Quentin, her children Karl and Melissa, and her son-in-law George Wallace. She is survived by her sisters Ruth Berner and Alice (Joan) Berner of Minersville, Pennsylvania along with numerous nieces and nephews. Betty is also survived by her daughters Rebecca Wallace and Cathy Myers and son Kurt and wife Sandra, grandchildren Sheridan Myers, Amanda Casella and husband Chris, Faith Moore and husband Ryan, Joel Myers and wife Alexandra, Benjamin Myers, Jordan Bays and husband Jacob (Jake), great granddaughters Reagan Wittnebell and Brooklyn Casella.
Service Monday, March 9, 2026, a private burial for the family will be held at 9:30 a.m. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 6914 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78240, with a meal immediately following.
