Elma Lara Gonzales, age 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, laughter, and unshakable spirit. A feisty little lady who was never afraid to speak her mind, Elma lived her life with courage, grace, and a sparkle that could light up any room.
She started working at the age of 14 years old. Her Mother, Isabel Lara worked for a small independent telephone company. The local & long distance company ran out of their small home in Encinal, Texas. Elma then transferred to Asherton, Texas, then Laredo, Texas & finally to San Antonio. She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company with 32 years of service.
Elma loved to dance - whether it was a lively tune or a slow rhythm, she found joy and freedom in every step. Her adventurous heart took her across the American Southwest, traveling with her daughter and a close-knit group of dear friends who affectionately called themselves “The Golden Girls.” Together, they shared countless memories, laughter, and stories that will continue to bring smiles to those who knew them. Her best friend’s name is Syvia Arreguin & is last of the "Golden Girls"
One of their most memorable trips was to the Santuario de Chimayó in New Mexico - a place that offered Elma and her compañeras a sense of peace and spiritual renewal. It was a journey filled with reflection, gratitude, and the quiet beauty she so cherished.
Elma was preceded in death by her parents, Isabel Lara & Juan N Lara, her husband of 56 years, Raul Gonzalez Sr., her sisters Julieta Soto & Evelina Soto, her brother Juan Lara, as well as beloved dogs Georgie and Ralph. She is survived by her son, Raul Gonzalez, Jr. and daughter Graciela “Gracie” Gonzalez; grandchildren, Eduardo Gonzalez and wife Nicole, Cristina Veronica Thomas and husband Aaron, and Lazaro and Braulio Gonzalez; great grandchildren, Liam, Isabella, and Samantha Thomas; as well as a cat named Clover and a number of dogs that she has helped dog sit over the years, including Emmy.
Elma will be remembered for her honesty, her humor, and her unwavering zest for life. She leaves behind family and friends who loved her deeply and will forever be inspired by her independent spirit.
Elma’s family invites all who knew her to celebrate a life well-lived - one full of laughter, adventure, and the music of her own heart.
