Erma Lee Walker, 95, entered into eternal peace on March 6, 2018. She was born in Hugo, OK, on August 22, 1922. During High School she was the Drum Major of the Hugo High School Marching Band. She attended two years at Oklahoma State University until the Great Depression and then went to work for the US Army as a civilian secretary at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. This is when she met her husband Cpt. Ab D. Walker, Military Police. Erma Lee accompanied Ab thorough an eventful career in the Army where Ab was in charge of quelling the civil unrest in Chicago during WWII, worked in the Pentagon on the transformation of the Army Air Corps into the Air Force, and trained soldiers for WWII at Camp Bullis north of San Antonio. Lt. Col Walker medically retired in 1943 in San Antonio where they raised their three children. She was active in the St. Andrew Methodist Church. Erma Lee worked for many years as the secretary to the Ft. Sam Houston School Board and for the Superintendent of Schools. Ab retired again as the Principal of the Alamo Heights Junior High School and Erma Lee then joined him in retirement. As military retired, Ab and Erma Lee traveled “Space- Available” to the far corners of the Earth. She started a travel company and provided travel for friends and clients to points East and West. After Ab’s death in 1999 she continued to travel with her many friends, daughter Sally and granddaughter Tinsley, and with one traveling granddaughter, Kristin, and great granddaughter, Isabelle.
More recently, Erma Lee had been crocheting hats for the newborns at BAMC. She also was the assistant Librarian at Blue Skies Over Texas library. Nana, as she was known by most of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, was also working on the newest jigsaw puzzle when they came to visit. This provided many hours of conversation with a wonderful, witty, intelligent, caring, lady who was always more concerned about someone else more than herself. She did indeed live a life of selfless giving to everyone in need, a good example of God’s love to all her children.
Erma Lee is survived by many close friends, her daughter, Dr. Sally Walker, granddaughter, Tinsley Hunsdorfer (and husband, Andrew Polta); Thomas Hunsdorfer; son, Maj. (Ret.) Doak Walker; and son, Col. (Ret.) Robert Walker, MD, granddaughter, Kimberly McNutt (and husband Andy with great grandchildren Rebecca, Rachel, Dalton, Raegan, Ryleigh, and Rose); granddaughter, Kristin Walker-Piknjac (and great granddaughter Isabelle); and grandson, Caleb (and wife Cindy Walker, with great grandchildren Paisley, Norah, Emerson, and Dakota).
Her Memorial Service will be held at the Chapel at Blue Skies Of Texas East on Saturday March 10, at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow in the Legacy Room.
