On the early morning of August 19, 2021, Ernest T. Villarreal, cornerstone of the Villarreal family, breathed his last breath as his name was called to the heavens above. He was 55 years young. Ernest will be sorely missed for his charm, charisma, banter, and jokes and even more for his kind heart and bold leadership.
Ernest is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart of 39 years Irene Villarreal. He is also survived by his four children, Ernest Jr. and wife Alma Villarreal, Joseph and Gabriela Villarreal, Katherine and husband Christopher Gomez, and Kimberly Villarreal. Ernest was blessed with seven amazing grandchildren, Marcelina Villarreal (15), Christopher Ryan Gomez (10), Joseph Villarreal Jr. (9), Nicholas Alexander Villarreal (8), Bruce Gomez (5), Alexis Gomez (4), and Jean Gomez (4). He leaves behind his beloved sister and only sibling Janet Lemman.
Ernest was born to Isabel Talamantez on June 17, 1966 in San Antonio, TX. He was raised by his mother and grandparents Carolina and Silvester Talamantez. It was evident he was challenged growing up, every opportunity was battled for. Though the odds were stacked against him, by God’s grace, he rose from adversity breaking every barrier placed ahead of him. He made a man of himself maturing as a jack of all trades mentoring with uncles, cousins, and friends.
Ernest married his high school sweetheart in 1982. They worked together sometimes even at the same job just to make a living for their two boys, Ernest Jr. and Joseph. Ernest began a career at SAWS in April 1989 as a laborer. He was “one of the boys”. His work ethic is unlike many, his drive and motivation never allowed him to settle. He trained and educated himself from laborer to equipment operator where he mastered heavy machines for many years.
Psalms 127:3 says “Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him". God must have been pleased thus far as he allowed Ernest to come back for second helpings with two more children, his baby girls Katherine and Kimberly. With four children and a wife to care for, Ernest cemented his legacy at SAWS advancing further and further. Statistically, Ernest should have never made it passed equipment operator. His drive for advancement to care for his family would carry him onto foreman where he developed his leadership skills. By the favor of God he was promoted to superintendent at the east side service center. For a former blue-collar worker with no advanced education this is a colossal accomplishment he was very proud of. After 32 long hard-working years he was able to retire for a brief time before joining his Father in heaven.
Though he spent most of his time working for his family, he was never hesitant to give a helping hand to family and friends. Hebrews 13:16 says “And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” Those blessed to be apart of Ernest’s life knew he was quick to share his skills and advice with those in need. He had a hand in countless family’s homes.
Ernest also enjoyed the outdoors. He was fond of taking family and friends on boat rides on the nearest lakes. Whether it was a quick ride with friends or fishing with his spiritual brothers, he enjoyed his time out on the water.
Ernest loved his seven grandchildren deeply. He would do anything for them, Grandpa was never to busy. He made it clear every time he spent time with them. They were loved endlessly and they all know it. Grandpa will always be there to watch over you.
In the final months leading up to his death he was at peace with God attending Community Bible Church regularly with his family. He would arrive extra early to park in the first spot by the tree so he could get his usual seat.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy and blessings will be passed on beyond measure to his children and grandchildren and their children over.
