

Evelyn F. Schneider, age 92, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died surrounded by family on Saturday, March 19. Evelyn was born on an oil lease near Graham, Young County, Texas during the summer of 1923 to Robert E. and Helen E. Bland. She grew up in Luling, Texas and after moving to San Antonio, graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio in 1941. In the spring of 1942, at age 18, she married Lt. Peyton S. Mathis Jr. of Montgomery, AL at his duty station in Los Angeles, California. Major Mathis was lost in action over Guadalcanal on 5 June 1944. Following his death, Evelyn returned to San Antonio finishing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics at Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, Texas. Evelyn married Carl F. Schneider of San Antonio, Texas in 1947. Three sons followed, Carl Jr., Robert, and Patrick. Evelyn and Carl continued to live the rest of their lives in San Antonio, Texas.
Known as Mimi by her grandchildren, Evelyn spent all of her life caring for others. She loved nothing more than seeing children playing in the yard. She loved plants and gardening, cooking, sewing, and needle crafts. Evelyn was Past President of the Empress Candle Garden Club and a member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in San Antonio since the formation of the parish in 1976. Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents Robert E. and Helen E. Bland, husband Peyton S. Mathis Jr., husband Carl F. Schneider, sister Helen B. Bland, and brother Robert E. Bland Jr. Her surviving family includes her three children, Carl F. Schneider Jr., Robert E. Schneider and his wife Kathleen, and Patrick F. Schneider; grandchildren, Todd M. Schneider and wife Ashley, Allison L. Baggott and husband Sean, Brett R. Schneider and wife Nicole, Lindsay N. DeLong and husband Jeffrey; great-grandchildren; Cade, Ryan, Emma, Chase, Lauren, Jackson, Emily, and Henry.
The family wishes to thank all those who have expressed their sympathy for her passing and hope you will join us to celebrate her life. To know her was to love her. We know from here to eternity will not be the struggle she has endured on earth. We ask for your special prayers for the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren she left behind as she will be deeply missed. The family asks that any donations are sent to St. PJ's Children's Home.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery & Mausoleum, 17501 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, TX on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Visitation will be held from 1:30 – 2:00, Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00pm.
