I don't know where to start! Fran has been my mothers friend and bridge partner since I can remember, but my first strong memory of her was when my folks were selling their house and having a garage sale. Fran was helping my mom, and I can't remember the details but she had to keep one leg up, so she was sitting in the garage, giving people prices and taking their money. There was an old meat grinder that had belonged to my grandmother, and my then boyfriend now husband was interested in it. Fran made him pay for it!! Now that Dave and I are married, it makes me laugh to think that we actually had to buy something and an old something, at thatfor $2! that was in my family! And yes, we still use that old meat grinder. 
I also have always admired Fran for her active life, I remember when we both were younger and I found out that she went to the gym almost every day. She was in her 70s at that point, and I was so impressed! Not only was she staying active, but she was able to do things like go to the gym on a regular basis that I, in my 30s, was struggling with. She was quite a woman. 
Another very strong memory is being invited to seder dinner at Fran and David's house with Jesse and his new girlfriend Tery. I wasn't familiar with many Jewish customs at that time, and I was excited and a bit nervous about participating. What a wonderful experience that was - both she and David were so warm and welcoming, and put my husband Dave and I completely at ease. It not only familiarized me with the traditions, beliefs, and caring that surround Passover, but I had one of the best meals of my life! I even loved her chopped liver, which is nothing I have ever liked before. Of course, when I found out how many eggs went into the whole meal I almost fainted, but everything was just delicious so it was well worth it. The table was set with beautiful Wedgewood china, and I really enjoyed the traditions and readings that I learned about that night. 
I will miss her - even though she had left Rochester I was still able to keep up with what she was doing from Jesse and my mother. She was an admirable woman, one who made an difference in my life - not the least of which was introducing Jesse and I, who are still good friends - but equally important is that she was a great role model, for tenacity, strength, and love, and a part of her will be with me always.

To Jesse Markow and Family: Jesse...I was sorry to hear of your mom's passing. All my condolences to you and your family. I remember as kids we would trade stamps and I visited your home on several occasions. Your mom was always so nice and accomodating to me and I remember a few terrific meals. I especially remember her cutting chives from the backyard and her delicious salad. I remember your mom as a terrific host and I am thankful for the opportunity to have known her. God Bless you and your family during this difficult time.

To Seth Markow-- Hello Seth! Greetings from an old friend. I was very sorry to read in today's newspaper about your mom's death. I remember her as a vivacious, outspoken person with a kind heart. Other than dealing with this painful tragedy, I hope that you and your family are doing well. Still living in Hawaii? All is well in Rochester. My husband, Don, and I have been married for almost 22 years I call myself a child bride and our daughter, Lisa, is 13, finishing up 8th grade at Twelve Corners Middle School. I'm a freelance writer for the Rochester Business Journal and Rochester Woman Magazine, sing with the Roch. Jewish Chorale, and am always busy doing Mom stuff with my swimmer/singer/flutist kid.
