Frank O. Fox passed away on March 15, 2011 in San Antonio with his family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Lecompte, LA on May 30, 1940 to the late Frank W. and Vaunciel Sowers Fox--only grandson with parents and 4 grandparents living close by to spoil him and help set him on his journey to touch many lives. Nine and half years later, a sister came along. After a few years of adjusting to sharing the limelight with his baby sister, he readily fell into the role of big brother, taking care of his sister & her friends.
His love for the outdoors started at a very young age living in a part of Louisiana that allowed him to live close to nature, which sometimes was too close to nature. He sometimes brought home souvenirs...one of which was a 3 foot live alligator into his parents home, frightening everyone except him.. His love for the outdoors continued throughout his life. He camped, hiked, bird watched, and had a love for the Native American Indian culture, of which he had a personal connection through his ancestry. In fact, he proposed to his wife, Dona, in the Pecos Wilderness of New Mexico.
His love of nature continued throughout his life, as was obvious in his involvement in scouting. As he introduced his sons to scouting, he helped form a scout's troop, handing on his love of scouting and the outdoors. His involvement included Scout Master to Unit Commissioner. He received the Bronze Pelican Award. Frank was also involved in Catholic Committee on Scouting and received the St. George award, which is the highest award a Catholic can receive in scouting. He was a member of The Order of the Arrow. He received the St. Christopher Medal for exemplary service to Boy Scouts of America by Knights of Columbus.
He had his own business as a builder/contractor, in addition to retiring from Habitat for Humanity 5 years ago. During his years at Habitat for Humanity, he had a knack for connecting with the volunteers, which lead to many lasting friendships. He mentored many young adults, including Ameri-Corp. volunteers from all across the country.
Frank's life exemplified the Beatitudes in his relationship with God, family, and friends. He was involved in St. Mark's Knights of Columbus and Mobile Loaves and Fishes. He and his wife, Dona, were members of the TEAMS of Our Lady for over 12 years at St. Mark's Catholic Church. The deep and lasting friendships continue today. Their support throughout his illness helped provide the strength that he needed to fight this devastating cancer.
His love for his wife and sons was endless, hoping to win a battle that would give him more time with his family. He was the rock of the family, fighting the cancer with strength, courage, and dignity. His love showed in his involvement in his sons lives through sports, scouting, Squires, school projects, and camping.
Frank never met a stranger...In fact, when "Donut Sunday" came to St. Mark's and parishioners gathered to meet and greet each other after Mass, the boys and Dona would joke that they would need to bring separate cars, knowing that Frank would be visiting parishioners the rest of the day.
He is survived by his wife Dona; his sons Jeffrey and Benjamin, all of San Antonio; his sister Elizabeth Fox of Sugar Land; his sister-in-law Rita Paxton and husband Brett of Levelland; his brother-in-law Mark Ortbal and wife Linda of Austin; his sister-in-law Joan Bridges and husband Patrick of Denver; his sister-in-law Anita Ferrie and husband Brian of Portland, Oregon; and his sister-in-law Jane Boen and husband Jay of Lubbock.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2011, at Porter Loring Mortuary North Chapel.
