Gabino "Gabby" Gomez Muoz, Jr, 62, passed peacefully in his sleep to join our Heavenly Lord on October 22, 2013. He was born June 25, 1951, in San Antonio, TX to Gabino B. Muoz and Maria Ignacia Gomez Muoz, he of Vera Cruz, Mexico and she of Taylor, TX. Gabby's tall frame and friendly smile made him a popular boy since his Cub Scout and Boy Scout days. He was naturally gifted in sports and loved baseball, basketball and football as a young man. He also loved music and taught himself to play bass guitar so he and his friends could form a band in middle school and high school. He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in San Antonio in 1970, and then enlisted in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. After Basic Training in Orlando, FL, he was sent to San Diego, CA, for Electronics Training, graduating as an Electrician's Mate.
Gabby was assigned to the CVS-14 USS Ticonderoga, where he was proud to play sports for his ship in addition to his regular duties. He also was very proud to have served on board when the Moon Missions Apollo 16 and later Apollo 17 were recovered after splashdowns in 1972. By June 23 of 1973, he was joined on the Ticonderoga by his brother, Carlos Muoz, and they both were on board when the Ticonderoga recovered the Skylab 2 astronauts. The Navy decommissioned the Ticonderoga later in 1973, then transferred Gabby where he served on a Submarine Tender, the USS Dixon from 1973-1974, until he returned to civilian life in San Antonio. He found he enjoyed working for the Veteran's Administration Hospital in San Antonio in the Procurement/Supplies Department until his retirement in 2005.
Gabby was a very kind hearted man that enjoyed his family to the fullest. He could always be found supporting his children in their activities and events. His children & grandchildren brought the most joy in his life. Gabby enjoyed friends and family Bar-B-Q gatherings while kicking back and watching his Dallas Cowboys, Texas Longhorns, or San Antonio Spurs.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mary G. and Gabino B. Muoz; and cousins Eddie Martinez and Jesse Pea.
He is survived by his ex-wife and friend Irma Parra;
