He proudly served his country as a medic in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. After his military service, he channeled his leadership skills and entrepreneurial spirit into his business, becoming the owner of Cal-West Rental Center in Temecula, California, from 1981 until 1995. His dedication to his work and the community was evident through his involvement and the lasting relationships he built with those he worked with.
He shared a loving marriage with his wife, Sandy Lynn Harper Rumsey, and together they raised a family that was the center of his world. His daughter, Cherada Lynn Weaver, and son-in-law, Jesse Lee Weaver, brought him immense joy and pride. Gary's heart held a special place for his daughter Michelle Ann Rumsey, who passed away at just three and a half weeks old, and his brothers, Max Ray Rumsey and Randy Charles Rumsey, who predeceased him. The memories created with his family were Gary's most treasured possessions.
Gary's interests were as diverse as they were engaging. He was an avid player of board games and card games, relishing the opportunity to spend quality time with his family and friends. His love for the news was unparalleled; he was a self-proclaimed news junkie who enjoyed reading the Wall Street Journal and could often be found researching various topics that sparked his curiosity. Gary's analytical mind was always at work, whether he was deep in thought over the latest news or solving problems with his do-it-yourself home projects.
An enthusiast of the outdoors, Gary found solace and excitement in trap shooting, a sport that combined his love for precision and the open air. His hands were rarely still, as he was always tinkering, fixing, or improving something around the house. His projects were not just tasks but reflections of his desire to make the world around him a better place.
