Genevieve Ortiz Garcia, 87, joined our heavenly father on May 9, 2021 surrounded by loved ones. A native San Antonian, she was born on Dec. 31, 1933 to Luisa Ortiz and Arnulfo Ortiz. She was a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School where she was involved in photography. She married Louis S. Garcia, a fellow Lanier graduate, on June 7, 1959, and were married 34 years until his passing on Nov. 7, 1993.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Louis S. Garcia, her son Louis D. Garcia, as well as her parents and two sisters.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Lilia N. Garcia, daughter Cathy E. Garcia (Max Garcia III), and her grandchildren: Jeannette E. Garcia, Adrian L. Garcia (Devon Knight-Garcia), Sergio A. Garcia, Briana Garcia-Romo (Matthew Romo) and Bianka Garcia (Joaquin Garcia), as well as four brothers and five sisters and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Genevieve was the epitome example of a strong and loving matriarch to her father, siblings, husband, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed making very large meals both in the kitchen or barbecuing on the grill to ensure everyone was fed, including many friends who considered her a second mother. Her tamales, menudo, potato salad, barbecued chicken and ribs were always a family favorite; each could have easily won blue ribbons if she would have entered them into contests.
She worked as a photographer at Studer Photo Company for many years until she changed careers into IT manufacturing where she worked at Datapoint and Xytronics until she retired, being the first employee to do so from the latter company in December 1995.
Genevieve was also an avid San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys, and Texas Longhorns fan, and would rarely miss watching any of their games. She enjoyed spending many summers in Port Aransas, Texas at her timeshare condo by the beach where she made many precious memories with her children and grandchildren.
Genevieve had an enormously giving heart. Six years ago, though, tragedy struck as she had a stroke. This quickly accelerated her memory loss caused by dementia, a terrible disease that affects more than 3 million Americans per year.
The stroke also left Genevieve half paralyzed and it became necessary for her to be taken care of with the same love and devotion she had granted others for which her son's family happily stepped up. Along with any flowers bought in her memory, the family asks that you make a donation in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Her care during the last three years would not have been possible without the Staff at Trinity Hospice, including her nurses, Christine and Chris, her CNAs, Anita and Ruby and her social workers, Joanne and Jorge.
