George Lawrence Holcomb, Colonel, USAF Ret. passed away in San Antonio, Texas on May 6, 2002 at the age of 90. Colonel Holcomb was a graduate of Trinity University in Waxahachie, Texas and of the United States Military Academy at West Point, class of 1937. In 1938, he received his pilot's wings at Kelly Air Force Base and began a 22-year military career which included a variety of assignments including overseas assignments in the Aleutian Islands during World War II and in Korea during the early years of that conflict. Numerous stateside assignments included a three-year tour from 1946-1949 as a member of the faculty at the United States Military Academy and a two-year tour from 1958 to 1960 as head of the foreign language department at the United States Air Force Academy. Meanwhile, he had earned a master's degree at Middlebury College in Vermont and a Ph.D. at the University of Texas, Austin. Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1960, Colonel Holcomb joined the faculty at Trinity University in San Antonio where he served until he retired in 1977. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jessie Lynn Holcomb. He is survived by a son, George L. Holcomb, Jr. of San Antonio.
