I never met General Wallace, but I found letter that he wrote to my father (SGT Oscar Doward) a few days ago. My father served as a young NCO under General Wallace when he was the Battalion Commander of 1-16 Infantry Battalion. The General's letter told how he remembered my dad being wounded and subsequently losing his leg. He talked of how he admired my father's courage and sturdy demeanor knowing that he would live the rest of his life with only one leg. My dad was 22 years old at the time, and General Wallace wanted to know how he was doing. Him taking the time to find a subordinate eight years later, and pen such a beautiful letter is the purest form of leadership I have seen in a long time. I wish that I had seen this letter earlier. I lost my father three years ago...he died the same day that I was officially promoted to Colonel in the U.S. Army. I was sadden to hear that I could not follow up with the General and tell him how great a life my father had, and how much he inspired me to get to where I am today. God bless your memory Sir...

i was fortunate and honored to serve under General Wallace from 1974-1979 at Fort Sam Houston, 5th Army HQ, I had a lot of fun experiences with him from running down the street chasing a horse to driving him one day when no one was available to getting us lost! I also learned a lot from this wonderful man and I am forever grateful.

Task Force Oregon was formed in Long Binh, Vietnam in about May, 1967. Then Colonel Wallace was its G3 and I was a captain assigned as his plans officer. Shortly after it was formed, TFO moved to Chu Lai and commenced combat operations. Col Wallace and I worked closely during all operations to include flying over battlefields in helicopters while Col Wallace adjusted artillery fire to support ground troops. He remains one of my three, all time heroes - a true leader, a combat soldier's soldier and a gentleman.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of a great soldier and gentleman. I was gen. Wallace's pilot while in Korea. He made my career possible in the army. I am x enlisted x warrant and was a capt when I flew him all over Korea. God bless you.

There are never any right words to express how deeply sad I am for the pain your family is enduring at this difficult time. Although I did not have the honor and pleasure of knowing him, as Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations, I am sincerely thankful for his valiant service in defense of our rights and freedom. His commitment to family, friends, our community, and to serving our great nation leaves a wonderful legacy. May the love and the wonderful memories you shared with him help you when you need it most. He will never be forgotten, and your family will be remembered in my prayers.

Dear Mrs. Wallace, You and your family---especially dear Jordan and Anne---have been in my thoughts constantly since I learned about General Wallace. I am sad at the thought of your sadness and sad again at the thought that General Wallace---whose strong, kind, ultrarefined and highly civilized presence on the earth always reassured me---has left the world. General Wallace contributed a great deal to the world and to my fund of wonderful memories. Only weeks ago, my mother I and were discussing---with deepest gratitude---his kindness to us when tragedy struck our family. What a gentleman your husband was! What a facility with his native tongue he had! He was a great commander of men and of the English language. For him, good manners and good grammar were akin to a moral obligation. Both were as natural to him as breathing. You simply can not imagine how many times I have praised General Wallace to parents of students at his prep school or West Point as an exemplary graduate of those venerable institutions.
