

Gilbert was born on January 31, 1941 and passed to a higher level on November 8, 2016. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou with whom he spent over 51 years of marriage. Other surviving family members are daughters: Glenda Anzualda, Teresa Garcia Speer and husband Randy, Vanessa Gamboa and Husband Eric, granddaughters: Cassandra (Cassie) Speer, Nina Anzualda, Kellie Speer, and twins Mia and Avery Gamboa. Surviving siblings include sisters, Irene Garza and husband Richard, Margaret Lara and husband Manuel, brothers, Rojelio Garcia and wife Josie, David Garcia, Rupert Garcia II, and numerous nieces and nephews. Other special persons in his life include Allison and Miguel Garcia and their children of whom he was a proud godfather: daughter Angela Whitaker and son Jake.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ruperto H. and Victoria H. Garcia, brother Rodolfo H. Garcia, and sister Alice Garcia.
Gilbert proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for over 21 years receiving numerous awards, medals, commendations, and citations. Having been greatly blessed, he was a firm believer in giving back. He contributed to many local non-profit organizations in the communities in which he served and lived. Gilbert and Mary Lou were among the first volunteers of the Elf Louise project in the early days when used toys and books were donated. They spent many hours cleaning books and fixing toys. Gilbert served on the Board of the Westside YMCA for many years as a member and Chairman and proudly played the part of Santa Claus for the annual toy drive and family Christmas dinner. He was also actively involved on several committees at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo serving as volunteer and Director. Gilbert was a member of the Lonnie Irvin Daylight Lodge #1309 AF&AM and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. In the year 2013, he was recognized as a fifty-year mason of both organizations.
He will be laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors.
