Gloria Beckwith, affectionately known as "GB" to all who knew her, passed away on 5.15.2009 in San Antonio, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her three children; Ann Beckwith Maggart of San Antonio, Katharine Beckwith of San Francisco, CA, and Jack Beckwith and wife Carol of Boerne, TX, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. GB was known for her continuous zest for life, her remarkable worldwide career with American Red Cross, her insatiable love of travel, and an array of friends spanning the globe. Born to German immigrants at Waconda Springs, KS, a health sanitarium and respite operated by her parents, on January 13, 1918, she initiated her wanderlust at an early age, graduating from Northwestern University and working at Hull House, Chicago's oldest and largest social and human service agency. Stationed with Red Cross in Viet Nam during the war, she spent tours in Japan, the Philippines, and Germany, providing her with ample opportunities to make lifelong friends from many countries. Retired and living in Riverside, CA, GB became actively involved with the State Department's International Visitor Program, the Sister City Program and many other civic organizations. After retiring and living in California for more than twenty years, GB returned in 2005 to San Antonio, where she had been stationed at Brook Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston and Wilford Hall, Lackland AFB, as ARC Service to Military Hospitals. The family extends thanks and appreciation to her care givers Rose Tisdell and Margie Ford.
Reverend George Sturch will be officiating.
