In 1973 Gloria met and married her loving husband, Billy. Sharing many travels and adventures together, they were married for 49 years. They enjoyed building a life together and spending time with family.
Gloria enjoyed meeting people and worked in kitchen appliance sales. It was a good fit with her love of cooking and entertaining. She and Billy once owned a microwave store and customers would line up to attend her excellent cooking classes and see her demos.
She had many interests throughout the years. She enjoyed working with shelter animals and supported the Animal Defense League. She took Zumba classes, collected unique earrings at craft fairs, and her favorite music included Country and Tejano. She loved shopping and sharing that joy with gifts for family and friends. She had an infectious laugh and was a caring wife, sister, aunt and friend, touching many lives. Gloria had a beautiful collection of crosses that filled the breakfast room reflecting her faith.
As a member of the Red Hatters for a number of years, she maintained cherished friendships with many of the women. Wonderful memories of lunches, an annual weekend of floating down the Frio River, sharing joys and sorrows, and many other fun activities enriched her life.
“Sweet friendships refresh the soul and awaken our hearts with joy, for good friends are like the anointing oil that yields the fragrant incense of God’s presence.” The Passion Translation
She suffered the last years of her life from Aphasia due to a stroke, losing the ability to speak, but not her smile. She had the courage to accept social invitations and make an effort to communicate in other ways. Her spirit would shine through even if no words were spoken. Her niece expressed “when she hugged me I could feel the love, even when she didn’t have the words to say it. She was a bright soul”.
Gloria is preceded in death by her husband, Billy, and her parents, Isidoro and Esther Chapa. She is survived by her brother, Isidoro (“Izzy”) Chapa (Lynda); her sister-in-law, Beverly Burden (Larry); brother-in-law, Chris Warren (Sara); nephews Eugene Chapa, Billy Chapa (Eliza), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gloria will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff of Changing Seasons Assisted Living, and Companion Hospice, San Antonio for their exceptional loving and attentive care during the last months of her life.
