Graciela Martinez passed away on October 1, 2020 at the age of 95 in San Antonio, Texas. Born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on December 21, 1924, she is preceded in death by her parents, Pablo Martinez and Cruz Galicia Martinez; her brother, Servando Martinez (Angelica); his sister, Concepcion Presas (Ruben); her sister, Elena Cardenas (Felix); and her nephew, Gerardo Cardenas.
Graciela Martinez (Chela), was brought to the United States by her parents. She became a naturalized citizen, living out the rest of her life in San Antonio Texas.
Chela was a graduate of Lanier High School after which she held jobs as a sales clerk with Joske’s and Solo Serve department stores. She also worked part-time as an office clerk for the business office of Little Flower Church for a time.
Eventually, Chela retired to a life of companionship with her mother Cruzita Martinez in their family home; moving to a local nursing facility with her aging mother when elder care became necessary.
Chela appreciated visits from family, especially after her mother’s passing, often recalling stories about her childhood and providing advice and caution about the dangers of the world we were living in and reminding us to pray for each other. Her faith sustained her through much of her physical suffering, and at times she would comfort herself by humming songs of praise.
Graciela has completed her life’s journey and her faith in God and the sufferings of Christ are what would have sustained her through her last days on earth. She has left memories for those that truly knew her and gratitude that she is now in peaceful reunion with her heavenly family.
Graciela is survived by her nieces and nephews, Servando Martinez Jr., Isabel Zapata, Edna Jimenez, Adam Charles Martinez, Paul Samuel Martinez, Maria E. Bosques, Maria Helena Saldana and Pablo D. Cardenas; her numerous great-nieces and great-nephews who loved her.
Due to restrictions on public gatherings, the Visitation at Funeraria del Angel Trevino – 226 Cupples Rd. 78237 – will be limited to only 25 people. Face coverings are required to be worn at all times.
A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 8. On Friday, October 9, a Chapel Service will begin at 9:30 AM, with the Burial to follow at San Fernando Cemetery II – 746 Castroville Rd. 78237.
