Dr. Grover K. Yamane passed away on December 6, 2016, in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 57. He was born in Seattle, Washington and was preceded in death by his father, James Hiroshi Yamane of Seattle, Washington.
Dr. Yamane graduated from Yale University and New York Medical College. He completed his Family Medicine Residency in Kingston, New York and General Surgery Internship in Buffalo, New York. He received his Masters of Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, and completed the USAF Residency in Aerospace Medicine (RAM-General Preventive Medicine Practicum and Aerospace Medicine Practicum) at Brooks AFB, San Antonio. He was board certified with the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Aerospace Medicine, Public Health and General Preventive Medicine). His 20-year USAF career included assignments in Panama, Germany, England, Texas, and Florida. After his USAF retirement, he continued practicing medicine as the Occupational Health Physician at the San Antonio Military Medical Center. Outside of work, Dr. Yamane was very active with BSA Troop 485, serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster for over 10 years. He also served as OA Chapter Advisor for the Armadillo District. He was an OA Vigil Honor member of Aina Topa Hutsi Lodge 60.
Dr. Yamane is survived by his wife, Jill M. Yamane of San Antonio, Texas; sons Maxwell Yamane of Greenbelt, Maryland and Miles Yamane of San Antonio, Texas; his mother, Tsuruyo Yamane of Gig Harbor, Washington; his sister, Karen Yamane of Port Orchard, Washington; mother-in-law, Greta Marks of Harrisonburg, Virginia; brother-in-law, Clay Walthall and sister-in-law, Julie Walthall of New Market, nieces; Kylan Wright of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Katie Walthall of Mt. Jackson, Virginia, and nephews; Ben Walthall of Arlington, Virginia and Stephen Walthall of Richmond, Virginia.
Dr. Yamane’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and participating in scouting activities with his sons.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Epilepsy Foundation or FARE (Food Allergy Research Education) or performing a random act of kindness.
His family would like to thank his health teams at SAMMC, Camp Bullis, CTRC, Christus Hospice; his caregiver, Magda Perez; Christ Fellowship United Methodist Church; and all his friends and family for the love, prayers and support.
His Memorial service will be held on Monday, December 19th, 11 A.M. at Sunset NW Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Rd., San Antonio, TX. Inurnment will be on Tuesday, December 20th, 2:30 P.M. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio, TX.
