

Gus was born on May 18th, 1944, in Harlingen, TX, to Gustavo Marcelino Cantú and Maria Cabrera Cantú. A proud 1962 graduate of Brownsville High School, he was an active member of the Golden Eagle Band. Gus was a gifted musician, excelling on many instruments, but he was particularly known for his talents as an All-State clarinetist. His love for music led him to further his education at Del Mar College and Sam Houston State University, where he earned a master’s degree in 1975. During his time in college, Gus also played with the Houston Symphony.
After graduating, Gus proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Air Force Band of the West, stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Following his service, Gus dedicated his life to music education, becoming a beloved band director at several schools, including Austin High School, John Jay High School, Holmes High School, and Zachary Middle School in Austin and San Antonio. Gus found great joy in teaching music and had a deep affection for his students.
Gus is survived by his two wonderful sons, Rick and Michael Cantú, his beautiful daughter-in-law Christe Cantú, and his six cherished grandchildren, Sara Warner, Allison Cantú, Jackson Cantú, Davis Cantú, Olivia Cantú, and Colt Cantú. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Alda Muñoz, and his nephew David Muñoz, Jr.
He is also survived by his loving siblings, Elsa L. Cantú, Dr. Sandra Rodriguez and husband Ronnie Rodriguez, as well as Brother-In-Law, David Rousset Muñoz. Gus leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the many relatives, friends, and healthcare professionals who offered their care, support, and prayers in Gus’s final days.
