

Helen Henrietta (Pfeil) York went to heaven on December 9, 2013. She was born in Jourdanton, Texas, in October 1921. She grew up on a dairy farm in Atascosa County and graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1939, where she was head cheerleader. In 1942, she married Leo L. York. They were married for 70 years, until Leo's death in 2012.
She was also predeceased by her father, Victor A. Pfeil, mother, Hilda Pfullman Camp, and her three brothers: Victor Pfeil, Harvey Pfeil, and T.J. Pfeil. Helen is survived by her children: Victor (Nancy) York of San Antonio, Connie Turner of New Braunfels, Leo (Nancy) York Jr. of Austin, and Donnie (Wanda) York of San Antonio. Helen will also be missed by her eight grandchildren: Travis York (Los Angeles, CA), Regan Turner (San Antonio), Brian (Erin ) York (New Braunfels), Kyle (Erin) York (Celebration, FL), Sarah Jane York (San Antonio), Lorrie (Josh) Macy (Springfield, MA), Megan (James) Mansfield (Austin), and Karen P. Ellis (San Antonio), and her three great-grandchildren: William York, Evan Ellis, and Alison York.
Helen worked following high school at the Atascosa County Courthouse and for Humble Oil. During the war, she worked at Kelly AFB and was voted "Queen of Kelly." During Leo's Air Force career, they lived in Texas, Florida, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Tehran, Iran. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1962, when she began an illustrious career as a professional records manager, retiring from both USAA and Valero Energy Corporation. She served on the advisory committee for San Antonio College's Records Management program. During her career, she won many awards, including Employee of the Month for Valero and "Records Manager of the Year" for ARMA International.
Helen was extremely active in the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, where she held numerous committee positions and offices. She loved her time with Super Adults, the Believer's Class, and the Kitchen Guild of Laurel Heights Methodist Church. Helen enjoyed bridge, crochet, office work, and her ipad. Helen had recently traveled to Hawaii in September and was planning a return trip for 2014.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, at Laurel Heights Methodist Church. Private interment will be held at Fort Sam Houston at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kitchen Guild, Laurel Heights Methodist Church, 227 W. Woodlawn Ave., San Antonio, TX, 78212.
