Herminio DeLeon Mejias

Herman Mejias was born on February 10, 1927, to Luisa DeLeon and Benito Mejia of Yorktown, Texas. Raised by his grandparents, Francisco and Josephina DeLeon, Herminio spent most of his youth working the ranch alongside his grandfather.

On July 18, 1945, Herminio enlisted in the United States Army. Stationed in Ft Ord, California, Private Mejias was awarded Outstanding Rifle Marksman and the Victory Ribbon before his honorable discharge from Ft Sam Houston In San Antonio.

After his return from the military to Karnes City, Herman met and married his beloved Senaida Villareal on November 8, 1948. Together the Lord blessed them with 6 children. Sinton, Texas is where they chose to live most of their lives raising their family in that small south Texas town.

After attending school, he would work at several local dealerships as a mechanic where he mastered his trade. Soon, he would graduate to larger jobs as an expert diesel mechanic working on large offshore oil rigs. Herman would enjoy a long career as a trusted mechanic and would eventually retire from the renowned development firm, Brown & Root.

On November 8, 1998, Herman and Senaida renewed their faith and love at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Sinton, Texas. In 2016, they would continue their journey in San Antonio where they would make their home and share the remainder of their days together. Upon her death on February 21, 2018, they had been married for sixty-nine wonderful years.

Popo’s true-life passion was in his faith. Popo mastered the art of the faithful and beautiful prayer that he would continue until his death. He was, in every sense, a true prayer warrior. He was a passionate gardener and reveled in the joy of the harvest. He was a wonderful husband, father, grand-father and great, grand-father.

Known for his affection with children and animals, Herman could always be found with a hot cup of coffee and a “little something sweet” for himself and his companion of the moment. Herman proudly welcomed all into his humble home with a hug, a cup of coffee and “a little something!”.

Faithful to the very end, Herminio would reunite with his beloved Senaida at God’s pearly gates on August 29th and his loved ones who went before him. He is preceded in death by his brothers, sisters, parents and in-laws.

Herminio is survived by his six children :Daughter Luisa Gomez of Sinton, Texas (Husband Albert and children: Terri and Ida);Daughter Irene Amaro of San Antonio, Texas (Husband Ignacio and son James) Daughter Hilda Simpson of Sinton, Texas (Husband Terry and daughter Tara); Son Herminio Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas (Children Herman Gabriel, Israel, Michael and Brianah); Son Michael (Wife Sylvia and child Joseph); Son Jesse (Partner Jeffrey Giles); Herminio is also survived, as Popo by 11 Grandchildren and 5 Great grandchildren. Herminio is also survived by two brothers and four sisters, in laws and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for Herminio will be held Tuesday, September 13, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. A rosary service will occur Tuesday, September 13, 2022 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, September 14, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 102 Lorenz Dr., San Antonio, TX 78209. A committal service will occur Wednesday, September 14, 2022 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209.
