Hubert H. Legg

Hubert (Hugo) Harold Legg Sr., 85, went peacefully to be with his lord and savior at his home in San Antonio, Texas on April 2, 2020. Bud, as he was known to his siblings, was born to Heber Herman Legg and Althea Juanita Thompson on Friday May 11, 1934 on a cool dusty stormy evening 10 minutes before midnight at his grandmother Thompson’s home in Oak Hill, West Virginia. Hugo was preceded in death by his wife, Leatris of 59 years, brother Edward Alton Legg and sister Patricia (Patty) Ann Rowland.

Hugo served in the United States Air Forces from 1952 to 1983, retiring at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant with overseas tours in North Africa and England. In his military service, Hugo received The Air Force Commendation Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster; The Meritorious Service Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster; The Army Good Conduct Medal with two bronze loops; The Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster; The National Defense Service Medal with one bronze oak leaf and other decorations, badges and citation of merit.

Sergeant Legg was an outstanding marksman that competed successful both domestically and internationally and is recognized as a member of the President’s Hundred and NRA 2650 Club. From 1964 through 1969, Sergeant Legg was a member of the USAF Pistol Team which set numerous records including the national records for the .45 pistol, 50-yard slow fire competition, including the Interservice Service Pistol Team Champion record (1166-35X), which still stands today. Representing the United States in CISM (Council International Sports of Military) matches in 1969 and 1970, Sergeant Legg won gold medals for CISM Pistol and International Pistol as well as a bronze medal for Standard Pistol. In 1971, Sergeant Legg established himself as the Individual USAF Pistol Champion. At the 1972 National Pistol Championships in Camp Perry, Ohio, Sergeant Legg captured the coveted General Carl Spaatz Trophy (291-13X) and the Military Police Corps Trophy (291-13X). During the 1973 Shooting Championships of the Americas in Mexico, Sergeant Legg won two silver and a bronze medal, while later that year became the 171st individual to be awarded the U.S. International Distinguished Shooter Badge. Sergeant Legg coached a CISM team to a world record in Finland in 1974 and was awarded the International Shooting Badge by the International Shooting Union. Among Sergeant Legg proudest moments is the trill experienced by the American Flag being raised and the Star Spangle Banner played in another country which was always humbling and brought tears to his eyes each time he represented our country.

After retiring from the military in 1983, Hugo advanced his education by attending college and attaining a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences from Southwest Texas State University in 1987. Hugo also served as deacon of the Lackland Baptist Church and Cavalry Hills Baptist Church and recognized as a Deacon Emeritus at Cavalry Hill Baptist Church. At Cavalry Hill Baptist Church, Hugo served as administrator and treasurer. A founding member of the USAF Shooters Association, Hugo severed in various roles including President and treasurer. Active in the Grand Lodge of Texas for over fifty years, Hugo was a Master Mason in Good Standing with the Somerset Lodge No. 1205 in Somerset, TX.

Any challenge was Hugo’s passion, it’s what made him a good competitor and a tinker of sorts. Meticulously learning all aspects of an activity such as pistol shooting, golf, genealogy, electronics or computers, then to be able apply that knowledge to solve problems and improve his skill level was just part of his DNA. This intensity fostered a stern appearance, but those who knew him best also knew Hugo would go to any lengths to help family members or dear friends in need. Conversation was not lost on Hugo, spending hours recalling his past experiences, debating a view point and never acknowledging defeat on any subject, brought him great joy. Hugo lived a life full of experiences that took him across our country and around the world, but above all else he loved his family, his church and now is at peace being reunite in heaven with his wife.

Hugo is survived by his sons, Hubert Harold Legg Jr. and wife Jeanette, Charles Clinton Legg and wife Vicky Liu, Robert Randall Legg and wife Melissa, daughter Sherri Suzanne Meza, grandchildren, Jeremy Legg, Melissa Legg, Alison Legg, Chelsea Mikeal, Maverick Legg, Elise Yu, Joshua Legg, Jennifer Legg, Cassandra Williams, Christopher Williams, Kristina Garcia and Angelina Garcia, great-grandchildren, Elijah Legg, Charlotte Lundberg, Dylan Lundberg, Izaiah Williams, Lita Williams, sister Pamela Faulkner and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00pm November 27, 2020 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery
