Irene S. Lopez, age 79, of San Antonio, Texas joined the Lord on Thursday June 18, 2020 surrounded by her family. Irene was born March 15, 1941 in Poteet, Texas. She spent the majority of her life in Del Rio, Texas and made the move to San Antonio, Texas twelve years ago in order to help care for her granddaughters.
Irene was a loving wife for 55 years, devoted mother, gracious mother in-law, and “granny”. Irene had a smile that would light up a room. Her joyous laugh, curiously sincere questions, and kind nature shone though to all she met. She loved her family and cherished her grandchildren.
She was a passionate teacher for 41 years. After earning her bachelors at age 21, she went on to complete a Masters degree and counseling certification. During her years teaching Home Economics it was not uncommon for her to teach students that would later become parents to her current students. Irene was a legacy within the SFDRCISD system. She made learning fun and genuinely cared for her students. She not only taught at school, she taught swimming lessons, folkloric dancing and Sunday school at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Watching her daughter and son dance was one of her greatest joys.
As a devoted Catholic, she enjoyed going to mass as often as possible. She was an active member of St. Padre Pio Church. Irene enjoyed leading the rosary before mass and loved the weekly spiritual art class. She also was part of the prayer blanket ministry.
Irene was a master baker and shared her talents with family and friends. She made every occasion special with her deliciously massive cakes, and baked goods. If you wanted the recipe, she would tell you it had basically this, but each recipe was always unique. Delicious but never the same as the last time. Irene was also a talented seamstress. She created beautiful custom dresses and gowns for many of her lucky family members.
Irene was the #1 Spurs fan. She never missed a game, even if she had to listen to it on the radio. She often said rosaries for the Spurs to keep them healthy and safe during their travels.
She will be missed dearly by all who knew her. “Pray that God’s light will shine through you in all you do,” is a statement that she lived by and all her good deeds reflected it.
Irene is survived by her husband of almost 55 years, Dionisio Lopez; daughter Loretta Henderson and husband Donny; son Lionel Lopez and wife Leslie; granddaughters Loryn & Lillian Lopez. She is also remembered by numerous brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and students.
A private Mass for immediate family will take place. At a later date, when the restrictions and concerns surrounding Covid-19 have been lifted, we will announce a public Mass and celebration. Thank you for your understanding during these unprecedented times.
