Iva A. Raine

A graduate of Saint Mary's Hall, Iva attended Southern Methodist University, and received a nursing degree (LVN) from Southwest Jr. College. She was proud of her German heritage as the great-granddaughter of Ernst Hermann Altgelt, founder of Comfort, TX, in 1854.

After he moved to San Antonio in 1866, he commissioned the first home on King William Street, and, by city ordinance, was awarded the privilege of naming it, honoring Wilhelm I of Prussia, Altgelt's birthplace. Iva loved the study of history, world travel, art, happy movies, fresh flowers, gardening, and the San Antonio Spurs. A gourmet cook, she enjoyed entertaining and never failed to prepare the perfect meal. With her keen eye for design, color, and presentation, she was a natural and gracious hostess.

She cared deeply for her family and friends and was generous and unselfish with her time, care, and comfort. We all loved the way she welcomed us into her home, personalized gifts, worried about us, checked on us. Everyone was a friend; everyone was important. Iva laughed a lot, found humor in virtually everything. And she made us all smile.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Daniel Dane and Iva Newton Altgelt, and survived by her husband, John Raine; children: Chris Brame and wife, Pamela; Michelle Brame Gunnin and husband, Cameron; stepchildren: Melinda Raine Gibson and husband, Mike; and Melodie Raine Waters, and husband Bowen; grandchildren: Bill Brame, Gillian Brame, Luke Brame, Cameron Dane Gunnin, Emma Gunnin, Lauren Waters Gage, Leigh Waters Worthley, Beth Waters Wester and Trey Gibson; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Daniel Dane Altgelt, Jr., and numerous extended family members and beloved friends.
