

Jackie was born on June 8, 1945, in Pearsall, Texas to Orie and Erzula Smith Laster. He graduated from Dilley High School in Dilley, TX, where he played French horn and trumpet in the school band and was a member of the National Honor Society. During his formative years, Jackie was also a member of First Assembly of God Church in Dilley, Texas.
After graduation, Jackie enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he studied Defensive Fire Control Systems and served as an Airman in the 454th Bomb Wing. In 1967, he began his career at Texas Instruments as a software engineer, where he worked for 30 years before retiring. During his tenure, he continued his studies at Victoria College, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi State University and The University of Texas-Arlington, eventually earning a bachelor's degree in computer science from The University of Texas-Dallas.
Jackie was a man of great character, known for his gentle nature, quick wit, warmth, and kindness. He loved his family and friends and was a lifelong dog lover who had many furry companions throughout the years. He was always present at family gatherings and cherished spending time with his siblings, nieces, and nephews, who adored him. He had a fondness for pecan pie, sudoku, a daily Whataburger, and anything related to technology.
Jackie is preceded in death by his parents, Orie and Erzula Smith Laster, brothers Grady Gene Laster, James Lee Laster, Gion "Mann" Renee Laster, Orvil Dewayne Laster, sister Dortha Marie Laster Covington, and his partner Jack Harrell. He is survived by his sister, Vanetta Laster Banning of Dilley, TX, and his brothers, Tommy Laster (Karen) of Rockport, TX, and Bill Laster (Donna) from Greenwood, SC. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Jackie will be greatly missed by all who knew him and whose lives he touched with his kindness and warmth.
A memorial service to celebrate Jackie's life will be held on May 13th at 2:00 PM CST in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jackie's name to a local animal shelter or rescue organization.
