

At an early age James found Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. James graduated from Crane High School, Chicago, Illinois in 1964. Afterwards, he started technical school for air conditioning, but in the midst of transferring to another school, he was drafted by the military and entered service as a Marine on March 16, 1966. He received his military training at Camp Pendleton in California, and served during the Vietnam War era before his discharge on March 15, 1968. James received several Medals/Awards and the Presidential Citation. James returned home to Chicago and enrolled at the Coyne Institute of Technology where he achieved certification for Air Conditioning/Refrigeration.
After graduation he was employed by Sears where he worked for 17 years. When employment opportunities presented for the family to move around the country, James continued to work for Sears before changing his career path and accepting an invitation to work for the Carlsbad Juvenile Detention Center where he worked for 4 years. A move to Tucson, Arizona in 1988 propelled him into Law Enforcement/Corrections where he attended The Corrections Academy. He remained with The Department of Corrections for more than 10 years before going to work in Security at the Palisades Nuclear Plant, where he retired in 2002.
He was a member of The NAACP Organization, New Mexico and Texas. He was a member also at the Veterans of Foreign Wars #7108, and the American Legion Post 300.
James was preceded in death by his mother, Marinda; brother, Sylvester Horton; sisters, Connie Horton and Brenda Horton. James is survived by his wife, Henrietta Horton; father, Earnest Ross; siblings: Wayne Horton, Linda Horton, Diane Horton, Rochelle Horton-Payton, Terry Horton, Lydell Horton, Lisa Horton- Lenton, and Tyrone Horton.
