General Landrum was born on March 8, 1914 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, the
son of James Edward Landrum and Effie May Hooper Landrum. He entered
the US Military Academy at West Point, in 1932 and was graduated with
the Class of 1936. He married the former Kathleen Walker Molony on June
8, 1940, at Fort Benning, Georgia. The couple had three children;
Kathy, Anne and Jim.
James Landrum served in combat in the Pacific during World War II and
the Korean War. During his military service, in addition to receiving
the Distinguished Service Medal, he was awarded the Silver Star, the
Legion of Merit 2, Bronze Star Medal 3, Purple Heart 3, Joint
Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, American Campaign
Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp, National Defense
Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, World War II Victory Medal,
Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Arrowhead and 3 Bronze Service Stars
for participation in Western Pacific Leyte and Ryukyu campaigns, Combat
Infantryman Badge, General Staff Identification Badge, Philippine
Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Service Star, Philippine Independence
Ribbon, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service
Medal, and the Korean Service Medal. He retired on July 31, 1966, after
completing 30 years of active duty, in addition to 4 years at the US
Military Academy.
Following his retirement, General Landrum worked in the computer
industry and the real estate business. He and his wife lived in
Honolulu, Hawaii from 1968 to 1989 when they relocated to San Antonio,
Texas, and resided in the Towers on Park Lane.
Among his many outstanding personality traits, General Landrum will be
remembered for his great sense of humor, extraordinary wit, and kind
manner. His exemplary and unbounded love for his family and friends and
his genuine concern for the well being of others manifested itself
throughout his life. Throughout and beyond his career as an Army
officer, he took care of his men.
General Landrum is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kay; his daughters
Kathy Colbourn and Anne Landrum; his son James Edward Landrum III; his
granddaughter Kaitlin Colbourn, and his son-in-law Jack Colbourn. He is
also survived by many relatives throughout the United States and a
worldwide circle of friends.
