Jay Munroe James passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas, on July 5, 2024. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 12, 1947, to Oral Lee Baldwin James and Ed Menzo James. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Betty Wells James. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Grace Voges James; his brother, Joe (Lois) James; sister-in-law Gloria Lear; his five children, Jeff Marvin James (Jennifer), Janet James Weimer (Kevin), Tom Elliott (Laurie), Rebecca Elliott Woodland (Will) and Angela Elliott Everard (Tom); and grandchildren Meghan, Jordan and Rachel James, Evan Weimer, Ansley and Liliana Elliott, Gavin, Garrett, and Brynn Woodland, Violet and Lucy Everard; one niece, two nephews and a host of loving friends.
Jay graduated from Woodrow Wilson HS in Dallas, Texas (although he was born in Chicago, he got to Texas as soon as he could), where he excelled in many sports: track, football, basketball, etc. He graduated from A&I University in Kingsville, Texas. After a few years working for Texaco, he opened his own business: Hura King Car Washes, constructing and operating self-service car washes. He was an avid collector and afficionado of fine firearms.
Jay was a loyal member of Coker Methodist Church and loved participating in its activities, especially those of the Becomers’ Sunday School Class. He will be remembered in our neighborhood for walking 3-6 miles a day, greeting everyone he saw. Hunting, fishing, and discussing life with his “WTG Gang” were high priorities for him.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on August 2, 2024, 11:00 A.M. at Coker Methodist Church, 231 E. North Loop Road, in San Antonio, Texas. A reception will follow in the John Wesley Building. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Coker Methodist Church or the Texas Youth Hunting Program.
