Born on May 15, 1942, in Kingsville, Texas, to Flora Ebba Barton and Orville Clutch ("Buck") Barton, Jerry spent his youth embracing the outdoors and working a variety of jobs. From bagging groceries and working as a soda jerk at the drive-in to laboring as a roughneck in the oil fields and as a pipefitter, Jerry was never afraid of hard work. But more than anything, he loved bringing people together through games.
A proud graduate of Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M Kingsville), Jerry earned his degree in physical education and history in 1966. He went on to dedicate 35 years to teaching and coaching, sharing his passion for learning as a high school American History teacher, an elementary PE instructor, and a tennis and sports coach at kids' camps.
In 1972, Jerry married Lindsay, whom he met while both were working for Upward Bound, a university program supporting students. Over 52 wonderful years together, they raised three daughters, welcomed seven grandchildren, and embarked on countless adventures. Jerry found joy in the simple pleasures of life—playing dominoes, teaching ping pong, watching football, taking his grandkids hunting, and inventing new games. A familiar face at the poker table, he played twice a week and delighted in spreading holiday cheer as "Poker Santa," generously gifting his winnings each Christmas.
Jerry is survived by his wife Lindsay Barton; his children, Rosanna Falger (Christian), Stacey Van Horn, and Kerri Barton (William); his beloved grandchildren, Jordan, Chloe, Ethan, Leela, Eli, Alex, and Evan; his brothers Wiley Barton (Sue), Ricky Barton (Betty), Steve Barton; and his two sisters Sarah Seaman (George) and Peggy Genz (Chris).
Jerry will be remembered for his love of games. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on Sunday, February 16, at 11:00 AM at Porter Loring North, followed by a gathering at their home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to any youth sports organization of your choosing.
