Jerry L. Jones, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on April 16, 2024, in San Antonio, TX. Born on December 4, 1937, in Abilene, KS, Jerry's life was marked by a spirit of adventure, a knack for being handy, and a steadfast patriotism that only grew stronger through the years.
Jerry proudly served his country as a veteran of the US Navy during the Cold War. His time as an electronic technician had him flying in P2V Neptune sub hunters across the West coast and the South Pacific. His dedication to his country was a defining aspect of his character, one that he carried with him throughout his life.
After his service in the Navy, Jerry continued to apply his technical skills in the civilian sector. He worked as an electronic technician on the Atlas and Minuteman missile programs, contributing to the nation's aerospace endeavors. His career also included significant roles in the Apollo 11 mission and in the development of the B-1 and B-2 bombers. Jerry's work ethic and leadership skills led him to become a management supervisor, and he retired from Boeing Military Division after a fulfilling 32-year career.
Throughout their lives, Jerry and his wife, Judy K. Jones, lived in various locations across the United States, including Kansas, Seattle, South Dakota, California, Missouri, and North Dakota. Upon retirement, they settled in Sun City West, AZ, before moving to Sun City Grand in Surprise, AZ and finally to San Antonio, TX in 2019. They both thoroughly enjoyed their neighbors and community in each location.
Jerry's interests were as vast as his experiences. He was always around airplanes and even obtained his commercial pilot's license in the 1970s. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to try his hand at selling real estate, for which he obtained a license in California. Jerry also found joy and camaraderie in his time with the Elks club, as a Mason, and as a Shriner.
Family was the cornerstone of Jerry's life. He and Judy cherished the moments spent camping with their children, Lisa, Clayton, and Brandon, as they were growing up. These outings were filled with laughter, stories, and the creation of lifelong memories. The love of traveling stayed with them, joining a motorhome club in retirement. As a grandfather and great-grandfather, Jerry's legacy of love and adventure continued to flourish through his seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In his retirement, Jerry discovered a passion for golf, which he pursued with the same enthusiasm he brought to all his endeavors. He also revealed an artistic side, taking up stained glass work. His creations, ranging from full windows to small ornamental pieces, were not only a testament to his craftsmanship but also a reflection of his desire to create something interesting for others to enjoy.
Jerry's life was a tapestry of service, family, and community. His adventurous spirit, his ability to fix and create, and his thoughtful nature made him a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Judy; his daughter, Lisa Benefield and her husband, Pat; his sons, Clayton Jones and his wife, Carol, and Brandon Jones and his wife, Christina; as well as his extended family and friends who had the privilege of sharing in his remarkable journey.
Jerry L. Jones's story is one of a life well-lived, marked by dedication, love, and a zest for new experiences. As we say goodbye to this extraordinary man, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on the hearts of those who loved him and the world that was made better by his presence.
A service in memory of Jerry will be held at Fort Sam Houston Veterans Cemetery on 17 May 2024 at 11:00. We will attempt to notify everyone of the pavilion number as the time gets near and we get additional information.
