

Jo-Ann Kahn, passed away peacefully in her home on October 25, 2025, at the age of 83. Jo-Ann was born on September 5th of 1942 in San Antonio, Texas. She attended Burbank High School and Southwest Texas State University. She was a school teacher for many years in San Antonio before moving to Laredo in 1987 with her beloved husband and children.
Jo-Ann was a fun, lively and generous spirit whose warmth touched everyone she met. A faithful Catholic and parishioner at St. John Newman, she lived her beliefs through her kindness, compassion and commitment to helping others. She was a Member of the Women’s City Club for many years, and proudly served as President in 1995, Jo-Ann also devoted her time and talents to the Volunteer Services Council for Border Region Behavioral Health Center, serving as President in 2016. Her dedication to her community and church reflected her selfless nature.
Known for her love of animals, birds, gardening and baking, Jo-Ann found joy in the simple pleasures of life and giving to others. Her sweet smile, sense of humor and generous heart made her a light at every gathering.
Jo-Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henri D. Kahn, father, Joe G. Avelar, mother, Emilia Avelar, father-in-law Henri D. Kahn Sr., mother-in-law Lilia Sanchez Kahn, sister, Louria Mc Loughlin, brother-in-law, George Mc Louhglin, brother-in-law, Charles Garza, grandson, Raymundo (Trey) Salinas III, and stepdaughter, Vanessa Kahn. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Garza, son, Greg Kahn (Cati), daughter, Claudia Kahn, stepdaughters, Dora (Chris) Vardin, Zulie (Monty) Gundermann and grandchildren, Katelyn Kahn, Conner Kahn, Victoria Salinas, Lauren Kahn-Lizcano, Ryan Gundermann, and Eric Vardin, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Sara Castillo, Rosa Ruvalcaba, Manuel and Monica Puga for their loving kindness and compassionate care for Jo-Ann these past years.
A Memorial Service will be held in Laredo on Thursday, November 6, 2025, with a visitation from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm and rosary at 7:00 pm at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapel, 1410 Jacaman Rd.
A Funeral Service will be held in San Antonio on Friday, November 7, 2025, with visitation at 9:00 am and service at 10:00 am at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough. A burial service will be held immediately after at San Fernando Cemetery II, 746 Castroville Rd.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association San Antonio and South Texas Chapter or Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN).
