Aunt Joan was a beautiful flower on our family tree. My mother, Jeanette Houseknecht, is Joan's oldest sister and they were very close when Joan was small and my mother was in her teens. My mother is now 88 and still living in the San Diego area in California where she moved in the 1940s when she married my dad, Stan. When I was growing up in San Diego, my parents and my sister and I made several exciting summer vacation trips from California to Georgia to visit my mom's large family including her youngest sister, Joan. These are very special memories to my sister, Linda Gordon, now living in the San Antonio area, and to my mother and to myself. These memories were also precious to my dad, Stan Houseknecht, who passed in 2004. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to all family members and our condolences to all of Joan's friends.

We knew Joan Cole through her son, David Sumner. We attended various children's school activities where she and her husband were present. I enjoyed meeting her and found her to be a lovely woman who cared deeply for her grandchildren and other family members. I'm certain she will be missed by all who knew her.

Joan Cole was a blessing to me and students in my class for many years. She shared with so many children her love for life and learning. I will miss her smiling face!
