

After graduating from Alamo Heights High School in 1948, she attended finishing school at Monticello College in Illinois, graduating with the class of 1950. Joan then attended the University of Texas at Austin where she wrote for the Daily Texan and graduated in 1952 with a B.A. in English.
In 1953, she married the love of her life, Homer E. Martin. Together they built a life and raised two children, Elizabeth and Bradford and remained together for 48 years until Homer's death in 2002.
Joan was a proud fifth generation San Antonian who's German and French ancestors, the Herweck and Fest families, played a major role in the development of San Antonio. In 1966, after substitute teaching for several years, she was asked to return to her alma mater, Cambridge Elementary, to teach first and second grade. Joan remained there for 25 years until her retirement at which time she took over the reins of Martin Investments until she retired in 2013.
She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Robins and husband, Gregory; son Bradford and wife, Victoria; grandson Dr. Walker Robins and wife, Kate; granddaughter Ashton Robins Hawk and husband, Trenton.
