Joe Ray Bourland

August 23, 1935 – February 3, 2026
Obituary of Joe Ray Bourland
IN THE CARE OF

Sunset Memorial Park & Funeral Home

Joe Ray Bourland, beloved husband, father and Papa, 90, went home to Heaven to be with his Lord on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Joe was born August 23, 1935 to Benjamin Reuben Bourland and Rebecca Bourland in Duncan, OK. His family moved to Tulsa where Joe attended Will Rogers High School, running on the track team, and graduating in 1953. While in high school, he met the love of his life, Loretta June (Polite) Bourland, and they were married on January 21, 1955.

Joe graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Business in 1957 with an honors degree in Marketing, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, worked for Harold Powell at Harold’s Menswear, and served in the Army ROTC. Following his service with the US Army after graduation, Joe and Loretta made their way in 1959 to Boulder, Colorado, where they raised their family and became active members of the community.

Joe and a friend opened a menswear shop on University Hill in Boulder called The Regiment. The success of the store, near the University of Colorado, led The Regiment to expand to other locations throughout Colorado, including Denver, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins. Joe was active in the Menswear Retail Association and served as a member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Boulder. Joe had a love for the game of golf, serving as a Board Member of the Colorado Golf Association, was directly involved in setting up the Colorado Junior Golf Association, and was a long-time member of Boulder Country Club, where his love of golf was evident to all who knew him.

Joe was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Boulder and continued to be active as a member of Ascent Community Church until moving to Denver. He was an avid supporter of both his OU Sooners and the CU Buffs as a long-time football season ticket holder.

Joe is survived by his son, Jeffrey Brooks Bourland (and his wife, Dana) of San Antonio, TX, his son-in-law Don Bechter of Denver, Colorado, his grandchildren, Brooks Bourland (and his wife, Jennifer) of Superior, CO, Connor Bourland (and his wife, Bethany) of Dallas, TX, Callan Bechter Falkenstein (and her husband, Michael) of Denver, CO, Colin Bourland (and his wife, Adrianna) of Dallas, TX; Ben Bechter of Denver, CO and Riley Bechter of Denver, CO, and his great-grandchildren, Eloise March Bourland and Oliver Graham Bourland.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Loretta Polite Bourland, his sister, Shelley Bourland Eaton, and his daughter, Cara Lynn Bechter.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joe’s memory to the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame at Support the CGA - Colorado Golf Association

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held by the family at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Crist Mountain View.
