

USAF MSgt (Retired) Joe Clyde Nichols, 87, passed away Friday January 20, 2023 at home with all four children and two grandchildren by his side. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Victor Clyde Nichols, his mother Josephine Sivley, his wife, Janice Ralene Satterfield, three brothers, Victor Wayne Nichols, Louis Burl Nichols, and Paul Franklin Nichols, and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Cowan. He leaves behind four children, Mary Jo Griffin (Steve), Michael W. Nichols (Pamala), Thomas C. Nichols, and Pamela R. Nichols-Hickman, 16 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren. Thomas C. and his son, Timothy Austin, provided full care at home his final four years.
MSgt Joe Nichols served as a Medical Lab Technician for his country 24 years in Thule Air Base - Greenland, Wakkanai Air Station - Wakkanai Japan, Shepard AFB - Wichita Falls, Texas, Vance AFB - Enid, Oklahoma, Tinker AFB, Oklahoma City, Carswell AFB - Fort Worth, Texas and Brooks AFB- San Antonio, Texas. His last and longest assignment was at Brooks AFB where he worked at the School of Aerospace Medicine. He participated in research and logged many hours riding the human centrifuge. This contributed to understanding the effects of high gravity loads which aided the astronauts. Joe worked part time before retirement to start Joe C. Nichols Photography. He started with sports photos and expanded to school and wedding photography. In retirement he raised cattle on his farm in Arkansas and spent time with his last living brother in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was a very hard worker, loved his family, and he will be missed.
Service is at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors on Monday 30 January at 2:45.
