

Joel "Joe" Edward "Hard Luck" Horlen, age 84, passed away on April 10, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas. Joel was born in San Antonio, Texas on August 14, 1937 to Kermit and Geneva Horlen. Joel was a 1952 Pony League World Series champion, 1955 graduate of Luther Burbank High School, 1959 graduate and College World Series champion of Oklahoma State University, All Star pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, 1972 MLB World Series champion with the Oakland As, the 12th pitcher out of 20 Chicago White Sox pitchers in history no hit club, 1967 Cy Young Runner Up, member of multiple sports hall of fames, minor league baseball coach, founding member of UTSAs golf program, a scratch golfer, and above all a true gentlemen, role model, friend, and dedicated family man. Joel is preceded in death by his Mom Neva, Dad Kermit, Step father Joe Ashcraft, Brother Bill, Ex-Wife Kitty, current Wife Lois, and Daughter Melinda Horlen. Joel is survived by his Grandson Phillip Schoenfeld (Courtney), Grandchildren Forrest and Sayler Schoenfeld, Step Daughter Joanne Doll (Scott), Grandson Max, step son Alan Schwartz (Angie), Grandson Josh Eaton (Alexandria), Grand Daughter Samantha Schwartz, Sister in law Ann Gruber, and numerous cousins, teammates, and friends. The family would like to thank Generous Hospice and The Landing at Stone Oak staff for the amazing care they provided Joel during his battle with Alzheimers. In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions be made to The Alzheimers Association. A graveside service was held with family and a memorial will be held at a later date to welcome all family, friends, teammates, and any others that would like to attend.
