John Oge Flannery, Jr., passed away on October 21, 2021, at the age of 85. Born on November 24, 1935, he lived in San Antonio his entire life and was proud of his Oge ancestors who were Castroville settlers and came to San Antonio in the late 1840s.
He graduated from Texas Military Institute and from the University of Texas at Austin in 1959 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. John was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity at Texas and served a brief tour in the U.S. Army after graduation. He completed twenty years in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired in 1980 as a Lt. Colonel.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John Oge Flannery, and Dorothy Louise Bachtel Flannery; his brother-in-law, Marion Alfred Olson, Jr.; and by his wife, Caroline Olson Flannery, who was the love of his life for over thirty years. During their marriage he and Caroline took time to associate with many groups of friends in San Antonio and to travel whenever they had the opportunity. They also loved to watch their San Antonio Spurs. He is survived by two brothers, Martin and his wife, Kathy, and Michael; his wonderful niece, Tamara Louise Flannery Bolch; two brothers-in-law, George A. Olson, Carl Olson and his wife, Polly; his sister-in-law, Carol Fischer Olson; along with eight wonderful Olson family nieces and nephews.
John was associated for several years with his familys real estate and insurance business (J.B. Flannery & Co., established in 1893), and in 1974 entered the banking world, beginning his employment with Alamo National Bank, and retiring almost thirty years later from the J.P. Morgan Chase banking organization. During his banking career he took pride in managing both oil and gas, and real estate assets for several trusts and estates associated with those banking organizations.
At one time, he served as Chairman of the Board of Morningside Ministries, and enjoyed individual volunteer service in delivering Meals On Wheels, and was a volunteer for the North East Senior Assistance organization. John was a member of the San Antonio German Club, The Texas Cavalier for over 50 years, Club Giraud, the Conopus Club (for which he served as President), First Presbyterian Church, and the San Antonio Country Club.
He and Caroline had a great love of animals of all types and descriptions, and during their marriage made five dogs a part of their family and home. It is thought he would like to be remembered for his sense of humor and his affection for his little animal friends.
There will be a private service on Thursday, November 4, 2021 for his family and close friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Ames, Mathis Bishop, Rev. Bill Lewis, Sherman MacDaniel, John "Jack" Meyer, Keith OGorman, Carl R. Olson, II., George A. Olson, John Oppenheimer, Keith Orme, Sam Wright, and AA "Bud" Urrutia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Defense League, 11300 Nacogdoches Road, any pet rescue organization, or a charity of your choice.
